Breast cancer foundation or foundations can be found in almost every country. Most of these foundations are always committed to spreading knowledge and fostering hope in the fight against breast cancer. Some of them even fund mammograms for women who could otherwise not afford them. They also support research programs in leading facilities across their various countries. The foundations help in inspiring patients or women with breast cancer to stay strong and firm in their fight against the disease.

Breast cancer is a life-threatening disease yet it is curable if detected early. Breast cancer detection can be done through screening. X-ray mammography and clinical breast exam are the most common screening methods. Breast cancer foundations always try to raise awareness about breast cancer and encourage women to screen themselves regularly. Through regular screening, the disease can be detected early and this may help in enhancing the chances of survival.

The foundations also try to raise awareness about the disease by sensitizing women about some the risk factors.  It is said that the risk of breast cancer gradually increases with age. Other factors known to increase the risk of breast cancer are early puberty, late menopause and not having a first child after the age of 30. Research also shows that the risk is lower if a woman has a short menstrual life or gets a first child before the age of 18.

Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) is one such example and was established in October 1997. It is a nonprofit charity organization under the leadership of Mayor Yu-Foo Yee Shoon as patron. Its members compromise of mostly lay people and a few medical professionals. Its mission is to ‘Eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease’.
