Symptoms of perimenopause mostly occur a few years before you stop having your periods. During this stage, your hormones will fluctuate just like during menopause. This is a transition period that normally begins when you are in your 40s and lasts until menopause. In other cases, it can also begin when you are in your 30s. This is the time when the ovaries gradually start to produce less estrogen.  In the last one to two years, this transition is characterized by an acceleration in the decline of the estrogen levels. During this stage, you might experience some of the symptoms that are associated with menopause.

One symptom of perimenopause is changes in the monthly cycle. The monthly cycle is determined by the ovaries which produce estrogen and progesterone. When going through this phase, there will be a reduction in the production of these hormones. This will result into hormone imbalances that may lead to irregular menstruation. In some cases, the monthly periods may come either too early or get delayed.

Another symptom of this condition is mood swings which may be as a result of hormone imbalances. Hormonal changes can alter your emotional state leading to mood swings. Minor emotional distress can be a natural reaction to the changes that you may be going through during this stage.

Less vaginal lubrication at this stage will lead to vaginal dryness. This is normally due to reduced estrogen levels. The vaginal tissues start to dry up and they become less elastic. Other possible symptoms of perimenopause include headaches, night sweats, fatigue and hot flashes. You may also become anxious or depressed and this may lead to sleep problems.
