When your periods become irregular, longer, shorter or heavier and have either less or more time between them it is a signal from your body that you are approaching menopause. Even though this is considered to be a symptom of menopause it is in fact a peri-menopause symptom that is experienced in the time leading up to menopause. This peri-menopause phase can actually last for six years or longer so it is useful to understand what is happening and why.

How Peri-Menopause Affects the Menstrual Cycle

The changes to your periods are as a result of hormonal changes within the body. You are producing less Progesterone and Estrogen as you age and the Pituitary gland is transmitting out it's own hormone to try to stimulate your body into making more. The body then attempts to balance out all of these hormones and the consequence of all of this confusion is that your periods get caught up in this and become changed.

Heavier periods?

Estrogen and progesterone influence the thickening of the lining of the uterus thats shed each month during menstruation. When levels of these hormones get out of whack, the lining can become thicker than usual. That, of course, results in heavier bleeding when the lining is shed.

Missing Periods and More Frequent Periods

Skipping periods during menopause is also fairly common. Many women skip periods for several months in a row, while others have one only every other month. Menopause being the individual experience that it is, other women experience the exact opposite: more frequent periods. Women with this symptom have a regular cycle, but the cycle is shorter than the usual 28 days.

Longer or shorter periods

Some women will experience much longer periods possibly lasting for up to 3 weeks although with lighter flow. Other women are very happy because they experience a period lasting only 2 or 3 days.

Thin, Watery Periods

This is a symptom that is not talked of very much unlike heavy periods or irregular menstrual cycles. It is in truth, a fairly common occurence particulary among those women who experience loger periods. It is not normally anything to be worried about unless there is a chance you maybe pregnant where an ectopic pregnancy is a possibility. If you are also experiencing abdominal pain then it is imperitive that you consult a doctor immediately.

Simple Treatments

One of the simplest ways to normalize your menstruation is to make sure you're getting enough B complex vitamins, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. All these nutrients have been shown to help normalize the menstrual cycle. If youd like to try herbs, black cohosh and chasteberry tree are good choices. You may also want to consider adding natural sources of estrogen in the form of estrogenic foods such as soy, cherries, and yams.

Most women suffer from some level of PMS, with some women feeling their symptoms worse than other women. The purpose of this article was to give you a variety of natural PMS relief options.
