Andropause (or Male Menopause) is a multi-dimensional change of life with hormonal, physical, psychological, interpersonal, social, sexual, and spiritual aspects. All men go through Male Menopause, generally between the ages of 40 and 55, though it can occur as early as 35 or as late as 65. It signals the end of the first part of a man’s life, and gets him ready for the second half. Just as adolescence is the transitional phase between childhood and adulthood, Andropause is the passage between first adulthood and second adulthood.

The term “male menopause” is misleading. Men never begin having menstrual periods and so they don’t stop having them. Unlike women, men can continue to have children late into their lives. But when it comes to other life changes, women’s and men’s experience are quite similar.

The concept of Male Menopause is not a new phenomenon. Heller and Myers (1944) identified symptoms of what they labeled the “male climacteric” including loss of libido and potency, nervousness, depression, impaired memory, the inability to concentrate, fatigue, insomnia, hot flushes, and sweating. Heller and Myers observed that their patients had below normal levels of testosterone and that symptoms improved dramatically when patients were given replacement doses of testosterone.

The notion of Male Menopause or Andropause is accepted more widely in Australia, England and Europe than in the U.S.. There are many who believe that since men can continue to reproduce into old age, they don&#821<div

Others feel that Male Menopause is real, but is synonymous with hypogonadism (low testosterone levels).

Dr. John Morley (2000) has developed a ten-item survey to screen for Male Menopause. Survey questions such as:

1.Do you have a decrease in sex drive (libido)?

2.Do you have a lack of energy?

3.Do you have a decrease in endurance and/or strength?

4.Have you lost height?

5.Have you noticed a decreased “enjoyment of life”?

6.Are you sad and/or grumpy?

7.Are your erections less strong?

8.Have you noticed a recent deterioration in your ability to play sports?

9.Are you falling asleep after dinner?

10. Has there been a recent deterioration in your work performance?

If a man answers yes to questions 1 or 7 and/or yes to any three other questions, Dr. Morely deems that there is evidence that he is going through Male Menopause and may need to have testosterone levels checked.

A significant problems for men going through Male Menopause is depression, yet it is often times under-diagnosed. Failure to diagnose depression can be deadly. The suicide rate for men forty-five to sixty-four is three times higher than the rate for women of the same age. For men over sixty-five the rate is seven times higher.

I’ve identified several intervention strategies that have been effective. Some of these include:

Hormone replacement therapy,

Stress reduction, exercise, dietary changes,

Chinese medicine, herbal treatments, acupuncture,

Couple counseling, career refocusing, and spiritual support,

Sexual complusivity treatment, chemical dependency treatment

Treatment for depression.

Finding and engaging one’s “calling” in the second half of life.

For the last 40 plus years I’ve been dedicated to helping men and the women who love them. I’ve written a book on Male Menopause which provides an extensive analysis and solutions. For more information go to http://SurvivingMaleMenopause.com

<a

Male Menopause is largely a result of a drop in the production of testosterone in men. Testosterone and men seem to two sides of the same coin. Testosterone production in men begins slowing down after the age of 30. There are certain factors that aggravate this slow down.

Some of the most common symptoms of male menopause or Andropause include:

low libido and erectile dysfunction

loss of lean muscle

weight gain specially around the waist

fatigue and low energy levels

lack of mental alertness etc.,

However, there are some natural ways to boost the production of testosterone which can help you overcome andropause.

Here are some natural ways to Increase Testosterone Naturally:

1. Exercise

Regular exercise is one of the best ways to increase testosterone production naturally. Compound exercises are the best when it comes to increasing testosterone production. The best examples include squats, bench press, military press, chin ups, deadlifts etc.,

One important thing to keep in mind while working out is that you must limit your workout to 30-45 minutes in a single session. This is because over training can increase the level of cortisol in blood which can lower testosterone levels.

2. Rest Harder

Lack of sleep can also increase stress and lower your testosterone levels. Hence, it is important to sleep for at least 8 hours a day.

3. Have Essen<div

Some of the best sources include olives, olive oil, flax seed, avocados, fish like salmons etc.,

4. Reduce Stress

Stress can lower both testosterone and libido in men. It can also lead to erectile dysfunction. Male menopause symptoms include erectile dysfunction, problems with memory, sweating, anxiety, depression, disturbed sleep, short temper, and a lack of interest in sex. Though other health disorders can cause erectile inaction, testosterone deficiency is a strong factor that can affect it.

When women go through menopause, it means that a certain phase in their body, characterized by menstruation, is ending. Additionally, a crucial drop in a woman’s hormone levels occurs with menopause. Men’s testosterone levels drop as they age. Lower testosterone levels appear to cause male menopause symptoms.

For men with low testosterone levels and male menopause symptoms, the recommended treatment is hormone replacement theory. Unless they have unusually low androgen levels, hormone replacement will not work for older men with erectile dysfunction. Nominal doses of testosterone have been shown to increase the sex drive of younger men with a known hormone deficiency.

Although male menopause symptoms cannot be cured, they can be alleviated by ongoing hormone therapy. Testosterone deficiency is treated for life, as it is usually a permanent condition. Testosterone replacement is generally done by way of implants, vials or orally. Patients typically undergo semiweekly injections of testosterone. For those afraid of implants and injections, oral prescriptions are offered.

Placed under the butto<div

What the implant will do is deliver testosterone into the blood without any additional actions or drugs being taken.

Androgen therapy comes with side effects and risks. The prostrate generally shrinks with low testosterone levels. It cannot, unfortunately, be re-enlarged through hormone replacement therapy. Persons with higher testosterone levels run the risk of prostate cancer when they undergo androgen therapy.

Further research is required on hormone replacement therapy safety and possible effects on the prostate, cardiovascular system, and mental functioning. Periodic testing during hormone therapy to ensure a balance of hormones is relevant to address one’s bone strength and healthy connective tissue.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that androgen therapy may increase the risk of heart disease, but the scientific evidence is unclear. However, it is definite that some heart attack victims have had low testosterone levels. In addition to its effects on male menopause symptoms, hormone replacement therapy may prevent heart disease.

<a

In fact, it is said that the “middle age crisis” a man is going through may be due to male menopause symptoms. All in all it is a good idea to know a little about the possibility of males dealing with menopause symptoms.

You may be a little more familiar with this disease when it is called by a more popular term; andropause. This term is basically a way of describing the same thing as menopause, but it is designed to let men keep their own identity and vice-versa.

Like women estrogen levels decline to create the cycle of menopause, men is testosterone levels decline to create the same condition. Men also do not end to naturally lose testosterone, but declining levels usually are brought on by things like depression, stress, lethargy and obesity. Menopause in men is not necessarily the same thing as menopause in women, because men never lose fertility as women do.

Mans Experienced The Same Symptoms

Many of the symptoms experienced by women during menopause are the same as what men may experience. These symptoms can be controlled by making sure big, soft ice packs are available as often as possible.

Another common male menopause symptom is night sweats. Waking up in the middle of the night to sweating and being uncomfortable and hot is something else that can be controlled by using ice packs when necessary. Taking naps during the day when possible is another good idea so that lethargy does not become a problem.

Depression and mood swings are symptoms of male menopause that people mistake for as a “mid life crisis”. Clinically, what is normally seen is decreasing levels of testosterone, elevated levels of estrogens and increased levels of LDL (bad cholesterol), decreased muscle mass, and accumulations of central fat or adipose tissue. Psychologically, it is common to see a higher incidence of depression and decreased decision making abilities in andropausal men. Low levels of testosterone are linked to increased incidence of heart disease, higher blood sugar level, elevated triglycerides and LDL, an increase in prostate cancers, and earlier than predicted mortality. Unfortunately, serum or saliva measuring of testosterone levels in mature men is often excluded during normal physical exams.

Beginning around age 35, testosterone levels in men slowly start to decline. Unlike menopause in women that makes a rather dramatic appearance, andropause develops slowly over time and often goes undetected. Men don’t recognize that declining energy, vitality and sex drive are related to decreasing levels of testosterone. They normally assume it is just all part of the aging process. These levels continue to decline as part of the aging process, but are influenced by genetics, lifestyle, diet and exercise. Exercise tends to increase production of testosterone, whereas unhealthy eating, alcohol, and high levels of stress tend to decrease the production, which leads to accelerated andropausal symptoms.

Diagnosis of andropause

is somewhat straightforward by measuring testosterone levels in serum or saliva and taking a good patient history. The hallmark of treatment is giving testosterone supplementation, but it should be more of a multi-faceted strategy than just giving testosterone. The biochemistry in treating low testosterone levels, however, is more complicated than just giving testosterone supplementation. Treatment of andropause should also include the identification and reduction of stressors. Exercise, conflict resolution, emotional healing, male bonding, meditation, good sex, are all great ways to raise endorphins, improving a male’s sense of well-being and decreasing stress. Sometimes it takes a job change, lifestyle change or a change in home life to decrease the stress. Bottom line-a male needs to regain his maleness and his ability to be put in charge. Reducing stress is key to successful andropause treatment.

Clinically, once testosterone and estrogen levels have been measured, treatment can begin. I must make a side note here about also making sure the adrenal glands are getting nutritional support. I like future formulations by Dr. Wilson. I highly recommend his Adrenal Rebuilder and his Adrenal Stress Vitamins. I also recommend Fish Oil capsules, anti-oxidants, Vitamin E, beta carotene and zinc. There are a number of delivery systems for testosterone administration: injectable, topical creams and gels, pellets, and sublingual drops or troches.

The final step in treating andropause involves monitoring: measuring estrogen and testosterone levels, paying attention to estrogen accumulation (enlarged breasts, fat depositation around the midsection), as well as looking for positive signs of increasing teestosterone levels: increased muscle mass, increased hair on legs, increased energy and vitality, improved mental alertness and decision-making ability, improved sex drive, and decreased fat levels are all positive effects when testosterone levels are returned to normal.

In summary, low testosterone levels are linked to increased incidence of depression, higher LDL, heart disease, and mortality. By returning testosterone levels to normal, while maintaining estrogen levels at the low range of normal, it is possible to improve a male’s health as well as his quality of life.

Lyn Hogrefe is the owner of the Happy Hormone Cottage where women go to get educated about <a

Do you know the most commonly seen effects of andropause?

Andropause is typically defined as the male version of menopause. This will lead to a many unwanted symptoms generally. However it is notable that male menopause might have few or no effects on the human body at all. This can make this difficult to diagnose as a man suffering from this illness can have no negative symptoms that affects their sex drive.

The real fact is that testosterone or wanted is commonly phrased as T levels will reduce in men over time, starting at puberty to a high in the mid twenties to a low in the senior years, typically by the age of 55 and over. It is as T levels decrease that men will start to see some effect on them. This includes shrinking testicles, to low sperm count as well as volume, a reduced sex drive to even an inability to gaining and keeping an erection.

Even young men experience these symptoms, but the reasons can be from excessive alcohol consumption to smoking, stress related jobs or problems and even to as simple as an accident which leads to mental and physical trauma. Hence the confusion in diagnosis by doctors when they come across this illness in men. So occurrences of andropause is usually less detectable in men under 50, while there is an over attribution of symptoms to male menopause in men in their senior years.

Examples of this are evident in men that experience mood swings, unexplainable fatigue, bouts of depression and insomnia. These symptoms really have no tell tale, and while they are attributable to male menopause can<div

We recommend anyone that believes they are experiencing andropause to visit their urologists and outline if they have experienced any of the following symptoms simultaneously.

Andropause in Men: Indicators.

The following are direct indicators of the illness.

A loss of energy or the constant feeling of fatigue.

Mood swing or a feeling of depression.

A loss of sexual drive.

Cannot get an erection or maintaining an erection.

Loss of agility.

Constant nervous feeling.

Gaining unexplained weight.

Some loss of hair.

For more great tips on <a

Men between the ages of 40 and 55 experience a kind of hormonal change that is similar to what women experience during perimenopause. They experience a gradual drop in the level of testosterone in their bodies which causes widespread changes in how men think, feel, and function. This period of change is called andropause.

Andropause is a relatively new concept. Acknowledged only in the 1940s, we are only beginning to identify ways to diagnose it properly. The more we understand the changes that happen during this stage, the more we can find ways to help men cope with them.

Causes of Andropause

Andropause is a natural phenomenon that men’s bodies naturally go through. Research into it have shown that when men hit 30, their body produces 10% less testosterone at every decade. Together with this decline in testosterone is an increase in the product of Sex Binding Hormone Globulin or SBHG. SBHG captures testosterone, which deprives the body further of this hormone.

There are some factors that may cause the decline to happen earlier and become so severe to warrant medical attention. These include injury, stress, alcohol, medication, infection, and obesity among others.

Symptoms of Andropause

Testosterone is the primary male hormone. It is produced in the testes and in the adrenal glands. This hormone affects sexual function, mood and metabolism.
