By: Shelli Stein
I am frequently asked to pick 3 natural things that WORK to relieve menopausal symptoms. Here’s what I answer.

The first important thing to work with in order to feel better is your diet. Exercise is important too, but your diet is queen. There’s so much confusion these days about what constitutes a healthy diet. We are suffering from information overload and conflicting messages in the media about what is healthy and what is not. There are so many diet books and nutrition books, hundreds in fact, so the average middle aged woman doesn’t know where to start when it comes to eating what’ll help her feel her best during menopause.

The starting point is to make sure your diet is natural and unprocessed. Processed foods often wreck your metabolism and disrupt the hormonal balance in your body. Hormonal balance is the key to feeling your best during menopause.

Choose whole grains rather than refined grains. Choose natural sources of sugar from nutritious, whole foods like fruit rather than refined sugar. Limit refined oils. Eat whole food sources of healthy fats like nuts, avocados, fish, eggs, coconut milk, and organically raised meat.

It’s about the basics. You can get too caught up in the gimmicks and miss the big picture. Your body needs all macronutrients to thrive and help you feel your best during menopause. Cutting out an entire food group will send your hormonal balance out of whack, which is precisely the opposite of what we need during menopause.

The second thing that works in relieving menopause symptoms is getting sufficient exercise and enjoying an active menopause lifestyle. All women enter menopause at different levels of hormonal health and at different levels of fitness. We all must start from where we are and go forward from there. This may sound obvious but this point is not to be overlooked. If you enter menopause in a fatigued state and see that you’ve gained a few pounds, your tendency might be to start exercising like crazy to thwart the weight gain. However, that level of intense exercise will only fatigue and stress your already hormonally challenged body, doing you more harm than good. It’s essential then, to first assess your health upon entering menopause so that you begin, or continue, the exercise lifestyle that is perfect for you!

Another point is to focus your exercise both on cardio and strength training, working your body as a whole. At this age we want to be functionally strong and lean, and this is most effectively and efficiently accomplished by exercising your body as a whole.

For the third thing, let’s talk about managing stress. Let’s face it, menopause is a stressful time. These days women in midlife are pulled in many directions. We are caretakers for older and younger generations. We manage jobs, households, relationships and must find time for ourselves as well. Whether you practice yoga, enjoy tai chi, meditate or sit quietly every day watching the sunset, every woman must make the time to manage stress. It’s not an option during menopause: it’s a requirement.

These three: optimizing nutrition, leading an appropriately active lifestyle, and managing stress, are the three best pillars to use when building a foundation on which to go through menopause.

Shelli Stein is a Fitness and Nutrition Specialist and author of the books “Navigating Hormone Health” and “The Truth About Menopause.” To receive a copy of her Special Free Report, “The Top 7 Mistakes Made By Women In Menopause”, visit While there are over 34 symptoms of menopause, probably the most frequent daily complaint by menopausal women are” hot flashes” or “night sweats,” which are a sudden transient sensation of warmth or heat that spreads through the body creating redness or flushing on the face and upper body (according to www.menopausesource.com). Night sweats are essentially hot flashes that occur at night and cause excessive perspiration and discomfort. This is related to increased activity in the autonomic/sympathetic nervous system and results from declining estrogen production which in turn causes vasodilatation, a widening of the lumen of blood vessels (lumen being the cavity of a tubular organ, i.e., the lumen of a blood vessel,) which, in turn, causes flushing or hot flashes. While hot flashes during the day can be alleviated with air conditioning and/or fans, night sweats also often bring a lack of sleep which has a more long term debilitating affect. While some women turn to hormonal supplements, both chemical and natural, many women are reluctant to take supplements for fear of side affects and complications. Therefore, alternatives have come into the marketplace to help provide solutions without the use of pills.

The first reaction that most women have to night sweats is to kick off the covers and to wear less sleepwear. “The human body naturally sweats to cool the skin, reducing the ability of clothing, footwear and bedding to keep the body dry and comfortable. Outlast® technology, conversely, will keep individuals comfortable by absorbing body heat when too much is created, thereby diminishing the amount of moisture.”says Ashley Tillman, Marketing Coordinator, Outlast Technology. The real answer to night sweats however, is to wear the right type of sleepwear or to use bedding materials that absorb heat. Outlast Technology, has developed a line of bedding materials such as mattress pads, sheets and pillow cases that keep women comfortable by absorbing body heat when too much is created, thereby diminishing the amount of moisture. How do they do this – with space age technology that has been adapted for the bedroom.

Outlast uses textiles with “phase change materials” (PCMs). PCMs can be found in specialty items, such as antiballistic vests, automotive, medical or special industrial applications, where warmth and energy play a role. How do they work? PCMs interact with the skin’s temperature to provide a buffer against temperature swings by absorbing, storing and releasing heat while the material changes from solid to liquid and back to solid. This is known as a phase change. Water changing from solid (ice) to liquid is an example of this phenomenon. During these phase changes large amounts of heat are absorbed or released. PCMs are microencapsulated into the textiles and are then permanently enclosed and protected in a protective polymer shell which is very durable and designed to withstand textile production methods used in fiber, yarn spinning, weaving, knitting, and coating applications.

What does this mean for consumers, especially menopausal women? Bedding with PCMs balance temperature, reduce overheating, minimize sweating, reduce chill and actively regulate temperature. Instead of throwing off the covers at night, using bedding made with PCMs, available from Outlast Technologies through sites such as www.menopausesource.com, can provide night-long relief by removing the moisture from sweat and allowing you to sleep more comfortably at night. They also look appealing and are very comfortable. So the next time night sweats bother you consider buying cooling bedding rather than taking supplements.

Barry Chalofsky

Co-Owner of

If you are over the age of 35 and you are tired and cranky, it’s because of your crazy hormones. Preimenopause can make your hormones go insane, it will change you causing you to have mood swings, hot flashes, fatigue and lower your libido (low sex drive). There are methods to follow that will decrease the annoying side effects of menopause and they are listed right here.

You can control your hormones by taking birth control pills. Low dose oral contraceptives stabilize fluctuating hormone levels, alleviating Perimenopause’s most vexing symptoms like hot flashes, skipped periods, achy joints, night sweats and mood swings says Wulf H. Utian, M.D., executive director of the North American Menopause Society. The pill blocks the messages that are going from the brain to the ovaries and brings back a regular periods.

Fish oil keeps you on your toes! Perimenopausal women are prone to depression and that’s where fish oil comes in. It is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids that helps promotes the happy chemicals in your brain. In study women who took the fish oil experienced 57% fewer hot flashes than women who took a placebo. Taking 500mg of fish oil (with 350 mg. of EPA and 50 mg. of DHA), three times a day helps.

If you are overweight you are more likely to have more hot flashes during the Perimenopausal stages. The less you weigh the smoother the transition. Snacking on 1 oz. of almonds a day will help control hunger pangs. They contain oleic acid, an unsaturated fatty acid that helps trigger the compound that curbs hunger.

Sleeping difficulties can be caused by night sweats and hot flashes, sleeping with a fan even in the winter will help you to cool off and sleep better. The hormones can cause your body temperature to rise by 8 degrees, in a Columbia University study women who had at least 10 hot flashes a night used a fan or A/C to cool them off and the night sweats drop to three times a night. Menozac is a woman’s formula that reduces the signs of menopause, its natural herbal ingredients eases the transition, which will make you more comfortable during the process.

Your estrogen dips during this transition and can thin out the lining of the vagina, which can cause dryness and pain during lovemaking. Trying a water-based lubricant will make sex more enjoyable according to Lonnie Barbach, Ph.D., author of The Pause: Positive Approaches to Perimenopause and Menopause. If that does not work ask your doctor for a prescription for vaginal estrogen might be right for you. If you suffer from a low sex drive there are women enhancements that will increase your urge for sex.

I love to inspire people, positive thinking makes the world go round. />Menopause is widely known as the permanent physiologic end of menstrual cycles as a result of declining ovarian functions. During this period, the reproductive function progressively diminishes and ends. Women often find that menopause causes a significant change in their life, since it marks the end of their ability to bear children and other physical changes. This role change can be very dramatic and stressful to many women.

Due to hormonal changes, women may observe irregular menstruation, breast tenderness, and mood changes long before menopause occurs. The hot or warm flushes and night sweats reported by some women are thought to be the result of hormonal changes and indicate vasomotor instability (changes in the diameter of blood vessels). They may vary in greatness from a barely noticeable warm feeling to a feeling of extreme warmth accompanied by copious sweating, causing discomfort, insomnia and fatigue, and occasionally, embarrassment.

Causes of Menopause

The postmenopausal period is the time of life after menopause, beginning from about one year after menses stop. Perimenopause is the period extending from the first signs of menopause – usually hot flashes, vaginal dryness, or irregular menses – to beyond the complete end of menses. The age range at which menopause occurs is wide, between approximately 40 to 55 years. It is said that both the age of menarche (a woman’s first period) and the age of menopause are familial. This means that if menarche occurred early in a mother, it will probably occur early in her daughter, and if menopause starts early in a mother, it may start early in her daughter. The earlier the age of menarche, the earlier menopause tends to occur.

Irregular Periods. Because of the wide hormonal changes that occur during your menopause, it may result to irregular periods before your periods stop altogether. During this time, your menstrual flow will be lighter or heavier than usual. The intervals between your periods will be shorter or longer. Moreover, you may experience spotting between your periods. In some cases, women have regular periods until their periods stop suddenly, and others have irregular periods for a long time until menopause occurs.

Birth Control. Although you may be less fertile during the years just before the start of menopause, chances are you still continue to release eggs (ovulate) and you may become pregnant. If you wish not to become pregnant, it is advised that you continue to use birth control until the physician validates that you have reached menopause already or until you have not had a menstrual period for almost 12 months.

Hot flashes. These are sudden periods of intense heat, sweating, and flushing. A hot flush usually begins in the chest and spreads out to the neck, face, and arms. 75-80% of women who are going through menopause will experience hot flashes. Hot flushes may occur as often as once an hour and can last from a few minutes to an hour. They may disrupt your sleep patterns during bed time. An interrupted sleep can lead to insomnia, fatigue, irritability, or inability to concentrate. Hot flashes usually stop within 1 or 2 years but may persist for several years. They are rarely noticed by others.

Vaginal changes. Vaginal changes that occur during menopausal period include vaginal dryness which is caused by the loss of lubrication and moisture in the vagina; thinning of the vaginal walls and loss of elasticity in them. There is also shrinkage of the outer lips (labia) of the vagina. During sexual intercourse, these vaginal changes can lead to soreness and may also increase your risk for vaginal infections and urinary incontinence.

Mood changes. The hormonal and physical changes of menopause can cause mood changes. Symptoms such as nervousness, lack of energy, insomnia, moodiness, or depression are common during this time.

Home Remedies for Menopause

Beet juice is highly beneficial in the menopause treatment. It should be taken in a dose of 60-90 ml thrice a day.

Mix ingredients of 2 teaspoons of cohosh root tincture, 1 teaspoon of don quai root tincture, 1 teaspoon of sarsaparilla tincture, 1 teaspoon of licorice root tincture, 1 teaspoon of chaste tree tincture, 1-teaspoon ginseng root tincture and take 3 dropperfuls a day. This is one of the effective home remedies for menopause.

Mix ingredients of 1 ounce of almond oil, 2 drops of geranium essential oil, one capsule of 1,000 IU of Vitamin E and apply inside and outside the vagina twice a day to prevent dryness. This is a very good and effective home remedy for menopause.

Liquorice is considered one of the most effective natural remedies for menopause. />Menopause is a normal part of life. It’s one step in the process of reproductive aging. It is a point at which a woman is their last menstrual period. The permanent cessation of menstruation is usually seen after 12 consecutive months without a period. Most women experience menopause at the age of 40 to 58 years.

During this period, a woman gradually ceases to ovulate ovaries and the limited production of estrogen and progesterone. These hormones are important to maintain the vagina and uterus healthy as well as for normal menstrual cycle and successful pregnancy.

Although menopause is mostly a natural process, certain surgical or medical intervention it may give rise to more than project. />Menopause hot flushes generally continue for just a brief period, or a few minutes. On the other hand, hot flashes are considered to be far more intense as well as bouts may continue for up to twenty minutes with 15-20 (or more) episodes every day.

Hot flushes is a common menopause symptom. Sweating and sleeplessness are directly connected with hot flushes or warm flushes and the identical catalyst is associated.

In all of the situations, warm flushes could be precisely attributed to hormonal unbalances and oestrogen level lacking.

To a degree, a female’s body’s temperature is controlled by hormones. When a lady’s hormones get free from whack, (due to decreased oestrogen levels) she’s vulnerable to hot flushes along with other menopause symptoms.

A woamn may begin to very first experience warm flushes within ages of 45 and 55 with the onset of menopause. United states women typically start menopause at 51. Menopause has been defined as an uninterrupted time span of twelve consecutive months whenever a woman encounters no menstruating periods and signs the conclusion of her child-bearing ages.

This is a natural and normal occasion in most woman’s life and should be thought about as a life-phase and not an ailment. Nonetheless, a woman may start to experience symptoms (formerly not experienced) with the onset of menopause for which treatments are out there.

For mild to moderate warm flushes a female might wish to choose non-invasive homeopathic sort solutions, along with modifications to dieting and exercise and a fresh look at vitamins and minerals.

Research is definitely a import part of the equation and all women should cautiously analyze the potential symptoms, causes and treatment plans prior to menopause and perimenopause. This in order that she might make the most thoughtful judgements (best for her), in advance. Study also helps reduce the transition span. Analysis helps as well to assuage any kind of avoidable worries or “old wives tales” associated with menopause.

Hot flushes and other symptoms linked to menopause really are a natural part of daily life and the maturing procedure. When menopause alone can not be taken care of, the accompanying symptoms could.

An additional support for managing hot flushes is understanding the catalysts which could result in hot flushes. The start of hot flushes have been associated with stress, a shortage of proper sleep and rest, plus the consumption of particular foods and beverages.

If possible, it is best to avert high-stress circumstances. Be sure to get lots of rest. This may imply sleeping sooner to ensure a very peaceful night’s sleep. If a female is likewise have the night time version of hot flushes (night sweats) she is recommended to wear lightweight, wicking sleepwear and also to put into action the use split bed linen to ensure that she can easily drop unwelcome layers without coming completely awake to deal with the episode. If worse nighttime bouts persist, she might want to include the use of a bedside cooling unit which could aide in a rapid cool-down procedure.

Dieting and exercise in addition have a place in identifying the duration and severity of hot flushes.

Alterations to diet plan might be required. Caffeine laden beverages as well as energy type drinks should be severely confined and any form of alcoholic beverage ought to be taken away completely. />For many women the thought of dealing with menopause symptomsas they age brings about a high level of anxiety. Not only is menopause the first real sign for a women that she is getting older, but it can be a time of hot flushes, or sometimes referred to as hot flashes, periods of intense sweating and mood swings as her hormones undergo major changes. During the course of menopause a woman’s natural hormone levels will drop significantly causing several physical and emotional symptoms that can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Major Menopause Symptoms

While menopause symptoms tend to vary from one woman to the next, there are several that every woman seems to endure albeit at different levels of intensity. Of all the different symptoms, the most common one associated with the drops in estrogen levels are hot flushes (these are also called hot flashes), night and day sweats, major changes in menstrual cycles and definite mood swings and mental irregularities. It is not uncommon for a woman to start experiencing panic attacks as she progresses through menopause.

Easing through Menopause Naturally

Menopause is a natural part of the aging process, however this does not mean that you should have to be miserable and suffer the menopause symptoms that can make life for you and those around you miserable. You can of course talk to your family doctor and explain to him that you are having problems with hot flushes, breast tenderness and mood swings along with any of the other symptoms you may be suffering from. For the most part there is not much that he can do beyond antidepressants to help with the mood swings that may make you gain weight and perhaps a hormone replacement therapy which is a very controversial treatment. It is possible to have a slight increased risk of breast or uterine cancer, heart attack or stroke in some women with hormone replacement therapy.

If you want real relief, you need to look into a natural herbal supplement that has been scientifically designed to help you cope with the major menopause symptoms. In most cases you will find that the natural cures and supplements that are becoming more available are being found to provide the kind of relief that the doctors and the pharmaceutical companies simply cannot offer you. Often, if you do a little research you will find that some of the best herbal supplements are those that come from Chinese herbal medicine.

It never ceases to amaze me how similar the underlying principle of modern western medicine is to traditional Chinese medicine, with only sometimes the perspective or terminology being the only different factor According to ancient Chinese herbal medicine principles, as a woman gets older and reaches menopause, there is an imbalance of yin and yang, which parallels the modern scientific view of the imbalance between estrogen and progesterone. Yin is the feminine, youthful, nutritive, fluid substance where yang is the masculine, forceful, energetic principle. The sympathetic nervous system would be yang, while the parasympathetic nervous system would be yin. It is generally viewed that this sudden drop in estrogen is what causes hot flashes or hot flushes, which in ancient Chinese herbal medicine; they called this a sudden drop in the yin, where the yang rises to the head. They would then use yin promoting herbs and herbs to bring the yang down to help the woman during menopause. In addition, there would be added herbs to calm the patient, and promote a feeling of well-being. Most importantly, herbs work with your own body’s healing ability, rather than shock the body into an unnatural state like many pharmaceuticals do, yet still obtain excellent results.

These natural menopause supplements are derived from formulas that have been in use for thousands of years with great success in treating menopause symptoms. The initial reaction to many of these traditional herbal treatments has for years been treated by both the medical and the scientific community with skepticism. In recent years though, thorough scientific research has proven time and again that many of these traditional natural remedies do exactly what they claim to be able to do.

Confused about safe natural alternative medicine choices for your health? />Most people don’t realize that menopause isn’t the only effect of hormonal imbalances; or that men can also experience the ill effects of these chemical imbalances in the body. This is why it is very important to be aware of how your wellbeing and any physical or psychological changes that may occur throughout your life so that you know whether or not you’re experiencing hormonal imbalances.

Remember that there are many illnesses and diseases associated with these imbalances, such as diabetes, cancer (especially in women), or even urinary problems. All these can be alleviated or even treated with the proper procedures or medicine. Below are some of the signs and symptoms of hormonal imbalances so you know when to see a doctor or to get help.

1. Some people with these chemical imbalances may experience fatigue—even after they are well rested or even if they didn’t do anything strenuous all day.

2. People who also have hormonal imbalances might have trouble sleeping and experience insomnia.

3. These imbalances can also be menopause symptoms, since menopause is also caused by hormonal imbalances in older women. As such, women should be aware of any menopause symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats and the absence of menstrual periods.

4. Men may experience symptoms of hormonal imbalances as well. Some may even suffer from erectile dysfunction because of this.

5. If you notice that you’ve been gaining or losing weight rapidly in the past months, then you may be suffering from hormonal imbalances.

6. Other hormonal imbalance or menopause symptoms include fluid retention, irritability, increase in body temperature and mood swings.

7. Check if you experienced diminished sex drive, skin problems or acne and even change in the suppleness of your skin (dry skin or flaking). These are also signs that there is something wrong with your hormonal glands.

8. One way to determine if you have a urinary tract infection, which is also a symptom of hormonal imbalance, is to check if your mouth, nose, eyes and genital areas are constantly dry and if you also experience palpitations or an abnormal heartbeat.

9. Other physical symptoms include flatulence or the increase of gassiness, changes in body odor, a slight burning sensation in the mouth, tenderness in breasts (for women), aching joints or painful muscles and even rapid or pronounced hair loss (for both men and women).

10. Other psychological symptoms of extreme hormonal imbalances include suicidal thoughts, depression, lapses in memory or forgetfulness and disorientation. Some people even report that they have difficulty concentrating on tasks or responsibilities.

There are many different symptoms of hormonal imbalances that you should be aware of so that you can seek treatment accordingly, since these imbalances, if not dealt with properly can lead to more serious diseases or illnesses. It’s always good to be aware of your body and the changes in your body to prevent this from happening.

Lena Butler, the author of <a
